GIZA 87 Cotton
From the verdant fields of Egypt’s Nile Delta, where the World’s Finest Cotton is delicately handpicked, begins the journey of our Giza 87 Cotton shirt.
The Rise
Egyptian Cotton dates back to 1819 when Louis Alexis Jumel, a French textile engineer, persuaded Muhammad Ali Pasha to explore a new cotton variety discovered in Cairo. Jumel initiated small-scale plantations in Matareya. Known as Jumel or Mahò, this cotton quickly gained popularity in Europe, especially in England. In 1827, the introduction of Sea Island Cotton seeds by Muhammad Ali Pasha enhanced its quality. Establishing Egyptian Cotton as the most precious globally.
Iconic Exchange
The image above depicts "La Bourse du Coton d'Alexandrie," a key symbol of this vibrant, cosmopolitan city, which became the heart of the cotton trade. The first cotton sale was recorded here in 1865, and the stock exchange soon represented the city's thriving cotton industry. Cotton traders would gather to submit offers for the finest Giza cotton lint. In the image, blackboards display reports on the official pricing of Giza 1 (Ashmouni) and Giza 7 cotton, from which our prized Giza 45 originates.
